Open and honest communication: Talk to your children about potential emergencies in an age-appropriate manner.
Encourage children to express their feelings and concerns.
Explain what might happen, why it's important to be prepared, and reassure them that you are there to keep them safe.

Involve them in preparedness activities: Involve children in age-appropriate preparedness activities, such as packing emergency kits or creating a family emergency plan. This can give them a sense of control and ownership over their own safety.

Practice emergency drills: Conduct regular drills at home to familiarize children with emergency procedures. This can help reduce anxiety and instill a sense of preparedness. Make it a fun and educational experience.

Provide reassurance: Offer reassurance and comfort to help alleviate their fears. Reassure children that they are not alone and that there are many people, including emergency responders, who are trained to help during emergencies. Let them know that you have a plan in place to keep them safe.

Encourage expression of feelings: Create a safe space for children to express their emotions and concerns about emergencies. Listen to their fears and validate their feelings. Offer comfort and support, and help them understand that it's normal to feel scared or anxious.

Teach coping strategies: Teach children age-appropriate coping strategies to manage stress and anxiety during emergencies. This can include deep breathing exercises, visualization techniques, or engaging in calming activities like drawing or reading.

Establish routines: In longer-termed emergency situations, maintain a sense of normalcy by establishing daily routines and activities. This can provide a sense of stability and security for children during uncertain times.

Distraction and play: Engage children in age-appropriate activities, games, or hobbies to divert their attention from the emergency situation. Play can be a powerful tool for stress relief and emotional expression.

Stay connected: In a long-term recovery situations, ie: hurricanes or tornado, help children stay connected with loved ones, friends, or support networks through phone calls, video chats, or letters. Maintaining social connections can provide comfort and a sense of normalcy.
Even if you have to drive to get cell service or internet.

Practice relaxation techniques: Teach children simple age-appropriate relaxation techniques coping strategies to manage stress and anxiety.
Things like deep breathing exercises, visualization, progressive muscle relaxation, or engaging in calming activities like drawing or reading.
