Episode # 477, Ways To Stay Cool During Air Conditioner Outages

It Is HOT! It's hot where we are and it's likely hot where you are. What happens if the air conditioner goes out? What can we do to stay cool, or at least not so miserably hot?

We'll talk about that on today's episode.

Here are several ways to stay cool during air conditioner outages:

Stay Hydrated:

Water helps regulate your body temperature.

Use Battery-Powered Fans:

 Battery-powered fans and extra batteries

 Handheld

 Neck fans

Cool Wet Towels:

 Cool Cloths

 Damp towels or washcloths

  Neck, Wrists, Forehead.

 Cool cap

Take Cool Showers or Baths:

Can help reduce your body temperature.

Optimize Ventilation

Create Cross-Ventilation:

Open windows and doors on opposite sides of your home to create a cross-breeze.

Use fans to help circulate air, positioning them in windows to either draw cool air in or push hot air out.

Night Cooling: Take advantage of cooler nighttime temperatures by opening windows and doors.

Wear Lightweight Clothing:

Dress in loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothing to stay cooler.

Use Ice Packs:

Ice packs or frozen water bottles in front of fans f

  DIY air conditioner effect.

Sleep in the Basement:

It’s usually cooler than the rest of the house.

Limit Heat-Generating Cooking:

Avoid using the stove or oven, and prepare meals outside on the grill, or in slow cookers to minimize heating up the kitchen. Plan on "cold plate" meals (a Southern tradition) of chicken salad, egg salad, cole slaw, potato salad, chilled soups, or a garden salad with cold chicken or seafood.

Stay on Lower Floors:

Heat rises, so stay on the lowest floor of your home.

Find Community Cooling Centers:

Many communities offer cooling centers during extreme heat.

Use Cooling Gel Pads or Pillows:

Provide relief and are often reusable.

Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol:

Dehydrate you, making it harder to stay cool.

Close Off Unused Rooms:

Focus on keeping the occupied areas of your home cool.
