Episode # 456, How To Balance Faith With Prepping

How To Balance Faith With Prepping

Balancing faith with preparedness involves integrating spiritual principles with practical preparedness.

Faith begins with trust.

Proverbs 3:5-6 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.”

We need to seek God’s guidance in our prepping, in what we should prep for, how to allocate our resources, and how to prioritize our prepping.

It is important that we maintain a balanced perspective on preparedness. That means we avoid fear-based motivations, avoid excessive focus on worst-case scenarios, and live life with faith and hope.  This helps us to keep a positive outlook on the future.

There was a question posted in a group asking, “What should I be prepping?"
A lady’s answer to the question was, "Jesus is the only prep you need."
While we agree that Jesus is the ultimate prep, and a personal relationship with Him is the single most important prep that we can make, faith in Him prepares the believer for eternity, and He is the only way we can avoid spending eternity in hell.

However, Jesus doesn’t deliver groceries during show and ice storms, or turn our power on when the rest of the neighborhood is out.

Scripture clearly teaches us to be prepared, and we addressed that in our book, “The 31-Day Devotional For Preppers.”

Believers view prepping in one of two ways:

The first is the same way the lady in the group viewed. “I don’t have to worry, God will take care of me.”  Some interpret Scripture as spiritual and physical provision equally.

Some scriptures used are:

Phillipians 4:19, “And my God will meet all your needs according to his riches in Christ Jesus.”

Matthew 6:25, “Therefore, I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food and the body more important than clothes?”

There’s an old joke about a huge life-threatening flood. A man prayed, "God save me!”
When the water was rising, a boat came by and asked him if he needed assistance. His reply was, “No, God is going to save me."
When the man had been forced to the roof, another boat came my offering assistance, to which he gave the same answer.
When he was standing on the chimney, which was only a few inches above the water, a helicopter came offering assistance. Again, he refused saying, “God is going to save me.” He drowned.
In Heaven, he asked God, “Why didn't You save me?”
God replied, “I dispatched two boats and a helicopter. I sent help to you three times!”

God will save us, but He expects us to get in the boat. We have to take action.

Then there’s the second way to be a believing prepper:

God’s Word tells us to be prepared.

Proverbs 6:6-8, “Go to the ant, oh sluggard. Observe her ways and be wise, which having no chief, officer, or ruler, prepares her food in the summer, and gathers her provision in the harvest."

Proverbs 21:20 “In the house of the wise are stores of choice food and oil, but the foolish man devours all he has."

Proverbs 22:3 & 27:12, “The prudent see danger and take refuge, but the simple keep going and pay the price." Both passages are identical, which bears notice!

Mark had a professor in college that said, “If I saw it twice, you’d better pay attention. It will be on the test.” Here, God repeats Himself.  Life is the test. The prudent see danger and take action.

Faith gives us a sense of purpose, it gives us hope, and trust in something greater than ourselves.
Faith gives us comfort and direction during times of adversity.
Prepping is practical steps to mitigate potential risks. These steps can be developing our emergency plan, storing essential food and supplies, and developing survival plans. These steps will help us during natural disasters, economic downturns, societal disruptions, and many adversities we can face. While praying for protection and guidance, take steps to be prepared.

Faith does not automatically spare us from danger or troubles, but God is faithful to sustain us and provide a refuge to help us through. Experience teaches us that.

Psalms 46:1-3, “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth should change, and though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; though it’s waters roar and foam, though the mountains quake at it’s swelling pride.  Selah.”

Studying His Word, praying, fellowshipping with fellow believers, being involved in community, helping others in their need, and providing assistance when needed strengthens our faith and helps us focus on preparedness. Seeking His will and purposes for our lives is number one, and everything else will fall into place.  Three hundred sixty-five times in the Bible, God says, “Do not fear.”

We have repeated many times that prepping helps us to not panic when the unexpected occurs. Faith also helps us know we can trust our heavenly Father to work out all things for our good. Jesus promises to give us His joy, His peace, not the sort that the world has to offer, but the divine kind that has power to change hearts and lives.

Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.”

We love you and we are praying for you.
