What is HAM Radio Field Day And Why You Should Attend

Often called “ham radio,” the Amateur Radio Service has been around for a century. In that time, it’s grown into a worldwide community of licensed operators using the airwaves with every conceivable means of communications technology. Its people range in age from youngsters to great-grandparents. Even rocket scientists and a rock star or two are in the ham ranks. Most, however, are just normal folks, like you and me, who enjoy learning and being able to transmit voice, data and pictures through the air to unusual places, both near and far, without depending on commercial systems.

There’s always a debate as to the purpose of ARRL Field Day.

It combines public service, emergency preparedness, community outreach, and technical skills all in a single event. “It is part emergency communications exercise, part social gathering, part open house for ham radio – it is what the local club makes of it, but it is always a lot of fun.

Field Day has been an annual event since 1933, and remains the most popular on-the-air event in ham radio.

On the fourth weekend of June every year, June 22-23 this year, more than 40,000 hams throughout North America set up temporary transmitting stations in public places to demonstrate ham radio's science, skill and service to our communities and our nation.

Hundreds of thousands of hams around North America and beyond will participate in the beloved operating event.

The Amateur Radio frequencies are the last remaining place in the usable radio spectrum where you as an individual can develop and experiment with wireless communications. Hams not only can make and modify their equipment, but can create whole new ways to do things.

Here is why YOU should attend:

It is an opportunity to experience what ham radio is all about, and meet people who can help you get licensed, and learn to operate ham radio. At most locations, it is an opportunity for you to actually get on the air and make contacts far and wide.

Last year, we took our grandson who has an interest in ham radio to field day at a location in Alabama. John, one of the Extra class operators, sat Noah in front of a radio and explained how everything worked and operating procedure.

John helped Noah make his first few contacts and by the tenth contact he made, which was in Puerto Rico, he was operating like a pro.

So, find a location, go, meet some new folks, learn about ham radio, and maybe even get on the radio yourself. It’s a lot of fun, and you’ll be glad you did, and who knows, you might talk with Krista or me.

That’s June 22-23, 2024

Beginning at 1800 UTC Saturday (1pm CDT) with most locations operating for 24 hours
